‘The initiative was aimed at cultivating among students a sense of social responsibility’ A humanitarian gesture of students of the Department of Social Work at Don Bosco Arts and Science College at Angadikkadavu here has resulted in the construction of a house for a homeless family of a farmhand. Chacko Naduviledath, a native of nearby Vaniyappara, is a farm hand struggling to earn a living to support his family. The landless family living in a rented house started dreaming of a house of their own when local parish of Angadikkadavu gave it 7.5 cents land for house construction. Rs. 4 lakh collected The students of the college put in their efforts to collect Rs. 4 lakh and volunteer their time to join the workers to construct the house. The initiative of the students supported by Department head Fr. Joby Maniyanikkal and student co-ordinator Jimmi Joseph took three months to reach its fruition. The key of the newly built house was handed over to the family on August 17 which happened to be the first day of Malayalam month Chingam. “The initiative was promoted to cultivate among students a sense of social responsibility,” said Fr. Maniyanikkal. Built in 101 days The house was constructed in 101 days with students themselves joining the workers, he said. While the students pooled in total Rs. 1,20,000, the rest was collected as donation from others, he added. The construction of the house was a great relief for Mr. Naduviledath. “It is not possible for me to save money from my meagre income to construct a house,” he said adding that the students of the college turned his dream into a reality. His family comprises his wife, two children and his mother. The key was handed over to Mr. Naduviledath’s mother Elikutty by college Principal Fr. Francis Karakkat. College Manager Fr. K.O. Thomas and parish vicar Fr. Thomas Mundamattathil were among those present.

The students doing their postgraduate and undergraduate programmes in Third and Fifth Semesters here have their First Internal Examinations from August 16th Tuesday to August 23rd Tuesday. Classes will resume on 25th Thursday.

The students who joined for undergraduate programmes this year here are offered a Special Six-Day Full-Time English Proficiency Certificate Course. The bestseller Spoken English Textbook authored by Fr. Dr. Francis Karackat, the Principal of the College is used as the textbook for the course. Over 90, 000 copies of this 500-page book have been sold already and it is widely used across Kerala as a handbook to master English language effortlessly. English Proficiency Course has grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation as prime priorities. 15 teachers are trained to quip the students fully to speak English fluently, with practical dialogue sessions in pairs. Examination will be held on 23rd Tuesday. English Proficiency Certificate with Grade Point will be presented to students, based on their performance in the practical sessions and examinations.

As part of the curriculum, the BSW students who joined this year went for a two-day exposure programme in Bangalore on 5th and 6th August 2016, accompanied by Dr. Anoop Antony, Faculty In-Charge of BSW, and Rose Mary George, Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work. Initiating the students into professional practice in the field of social work, they visited several social service organizations, developmental NGOs and Professional Social Work Institutions including BREADS, BOSCO, Shehadan, CRY, SOS Children’s Village and DBTECH. “We are now sure of what we are to be. We are now properly motivated to shape our career. It was very wonderful experience being together with the marginalized and the deprived,” said Sanath Assena, one of the BSW students.

Seven Faculty Members from the Department of English presented papers during the two-day National Seminar on Cinema, “Breaking the Fourth Wall,” organized by the Department of Media Studies, Christ University, Bangalore on August 4th and 5th 2016. . Stenza Augustine’s paper was on “Representation of Women in Malayalam Films.” The paper presented by Sojimon C.C., Christy P. Benny and Aha Oommen was on “Censorship and Freedom of Expression in Indian Movies.” Sarath Krishnan, Anila Mary Thomas and Shijina K.V. had their seminar presentation on “The Politics of Soap Operas.” Two MCJ students from the Department of Journalism, Fr. Jeemon Francis and Namitha Lizbeth also presented a paper titled “In Pursuing the Identity.”

The students who are doing BCom Computer Application and BCom Cooperation programmes are given an additional practical accounting course on holidays by a professional agency to equip them for placement in the lucrative job market. Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with SPAC, a Kochi-based professional training firm. The students who complete 115 hours of practical session are issued a certificate recognized by the Government of Kerala. The course fee is Rs. 6000 per student. There are 45 students undergoing the training on Saturdays.

Kevin, Anandu winners in Interdepartmental badminton tournament The month-long interdepartmental badminton tournament had its climax on Thursday 4th August, 2016, with neck-and-neck finals in which Kevin George and Anandhu Vijay from BCom Computer Application with their amazing performance defeated Renji Sebastian and Akshay Kumar from BBA. Sachin Roy and Libin Mathew from BCom Cooperation are winners in losers’ finals. Minumol, Maya Winners In the interdepartmental badminton tournament for girls, Minumol Saju and Maya Baby from BCom Cooperation won the championship, beating Priyanka Mathew and Ayana Jose from BCom Computer Application. Minnu Thomas and Sandra from the Department of English Literature won the losers’ finals.

Upholding the principle of committed service to the needy as an obligation enshrined in the Values Charter of the College, the second year BCom Computer Application students had an exposure programme feeling one with the mentally and physically challenged inmates at Providence Home, Vilamana, near Iritty, on Thursday 4th August, 2016. Providence Home caters to 34 women with physical and mental disabilities, abandoned by family members and sidelined by the society. Sreedhareeyam (Wearer of Well-being), the Yoga Club at Don Bosco Arts & Science College, launched jointly by the Department of Physical Education and National Service Scheme), was formally inaugurated at 3 p.m. on Thursday, 28th July, 2016. “Yoga is not a religion. Yoga is a science, a science of well-being, a science of youthfulness, a science of integrating body, heart, mind, and soul. Yoga is a journey of the self, into the self and by the self,” said Principal Fr. Dr. Francis Karackat urging the students to grab the opportunity and to make an integral part of daily time table. Yoga practice is arranged in the seminar hall from 6 a.m. to 6.45 a.m. from Monday to Friday. Two Faculty Members specialized in Yoga, Rajisha C.K. and Nishamol N.V. will train the students.
