A man was walking along the road. He found a big elephant tied by a small rope on the front leg. The elephant was not tied with a chain but with a rope. The elephant was also not in a cage. The man was surprised. The elephant can break the rope off easily but it does not. He found the trainer who tamed the elephant close by. He asked him. “Why is the elephant not making any effort to get away? The trainer said. ”When the elephant was very young and much smaller we used the same size of rope to tie the elephant. At that age it was enough to hold the elephant. As the elephant grew up it was conditioned to believe that it cannot break away. The elephant believes the rope is too strong and cannot break free. The man was amazed. The elephant can at any time break free from its bonds but it does not do so because it believes it cannot. Friends, like the elephant how many of usgo through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something simply because we failed at it once before .As we know every accomplishment starts with the decision to try. So do not fear failure but rather fear not trying.No one has failed who keeps trying. As the English poet Oliver Goldsmith said” our greatest glory is not in ever falling but in rising every time we fall”. Failure is part of learning. We should never give up the struggle in life.so friends keep trying.

Once upon a time, a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and she didn’t know how she was going to solve it. Problems occurred to her life one after the other. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen and boiled water in three different pots. He placed some potatoes, eggs and coffee beans in each one of them. Once it was boiled, he asked his daughter to examine them carefully. She touched the potatoes and found them soft. When she removed the shell of the egg, she found it boiled and finally when she took a sip of the coffee, the rich aroma brought a smile to her face. She then asked her father what it really meant. Her father explained to her that all the three things were exposed to the same adversity- the hot water. But each one of them responded differently. The potatoes that were strong and hard became soft and weak. The egg that was fragile inside the shell became hard. However, the coffee beans were unique. When they were exposed to the hot water, it gave its own color and produced a new substance. So, dear friends, like the potatoes, eggs and the coffee beans, each one of us come across different adversities in life. Things happen to us, things happen around us. But all that truly matters is what happen within us. God has given us this life because he knows that we are capable of facing it. So it is our choice to make it a successful one or a failure. Every problem is an opportunity, we shall face them courageously to prove our worth.

33 undergraduate students from Don Bosco Arts & Science College secured A Grade in the Third and Fifth Semester Kannur University examinations.

There is a story of two monks in the Zen tradition. Two monks were travelling to a distant place. On the way they had to cross a river, as they started to cross the river they noticed a woman standing on the shore. She did not know to swim and thus she was in trouble. So one of them took her on his shoulders and helped her to cross the river and after that they continued their journey. But one of them seemed to be very upset, he questioned the other monk, “you are not worthy to be called a monk as you had a woman on your shoulders, do not go back to the monastery”. Then the other one replied to him, “I left that woman on the shore and I do not think about her anymore. I just tried to help her and now you are carrying her. ” Friends, everything depends on our mind and mindset, if our mind is impure everything that we see and hear would be seen and heard as impure. If our mind is pure we would think positively. This is what Jesus said in his Gospel of St. Mark, “there is nothing outside a man that can make him unclean. It is from within that evil thoughts, wickedness, deceit, envy, slander, pride and foolishness originate”. As Lord Buddha once said, “Mind is everything, what you think, you become”. Friends let us purify our mindset and live happily.

Among the ten NSS volunteers selected from the University of Kannur for the National Integration Camp 2017 at MGM College, Uduppi, was a student from Don Bosco Arts & Science College, Angadikadavu: Denny K.T. from Fourth Semester BCom Computer Applications. The camp was held from 22nd to 28th February, 2017.

The BCom Co-operation students won the championship in the interdepartmental Sports Meet held on January 25, 2017. It was the best sports meet organized in the campus so far in the history of Don Bosco Arts & Science College, said Principal Fr. Dr. Francis Karackat

In the Youth Leadership and Community Development Programme organized by Nehru Yuva Kendra, Kannur on 28th February and March 1st, 2017, the NSS volunteers at Don Bosco Arts & Science College, came out in flying colours winning several prizes in the various competitions. The programme was held at Sreepuram English Medium School, Pallikunnu, Kannur. Don Bosco Arts and Science College, Angadikadavu, secured the fourth place in the Kannur University Arts Fest organized at LBS College, Kasargod, from 15 to 20 February. The University has about 140 affiliated colleges and so the fourth position is indeed a remarkable achievement for the college, also being a self-financing college of rather recent origin. No other self-financing college is anywhere close to Don Bosco in the rankings while for the college itself this is best position ever. The college team reached the third position at the end of the off-stage items and with the points added from on-stage items the team acquired a grand total of 113 points. The participants bagged one of the first three positions in about 20 items. The participants in the items such as Western group song, English debate, computer designing, Malayalam story writing and drawing secured first prize with A grade. The Malayalam drama “Sumesh” directed by Mr. Jino Joseph won the second prize and Nebula (MCJ 1st year) was given the award for the best actress. It was the concerted effort from the part of the staff and the students along with the blessings of the Almighty that made this splendid success possible.

DON BOSCO ARTS & SCIENCE COLLEGE SECURES THIRD PLACE IN UNIVERSITY ARTS FEST (OFF-STAGE EVENTS) NECK AND NECK WITH GOVT. COLLEGE, KASARAGOD

The two-day residential camp organized for the National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers from the various batches of the second semester undergraduate programmes, held in the college campus on Sunday and Monday, January 22 and 23, 2017, was a thrilling experience packed with programmes to tap and enhance their personality, smartness, leadership potentials, social sensitivity and civic sense. About 8o students participated in the camp, led by the programme officers Sarath Krishnan and Rajisha C.K. College Union Staff Advisors Bibin Antony (Director, Physical Education) and Biju John (Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work) were also with the students preparing the football ground for the upcoming Sports Meet on Wednesday January 25, 2017. Phoenix Team from Taliparamba initiated them into the right mood and mode for the camp with their lively opening session. C.K. Rajisha broadened their mental horizons with her enlightening session on the NSS motto, “Not Me But You.” The campfire after dinner with songs, dances and party games by Bro. Roshin from the Department of Journalism made it an incredible experience for all. The orientation class by Sarath Krishnan conscientized the students about their role as NSS volunteers accountable to the society. In the concluding function, Principal Fr. Dr. Francis Karackat delivered the keynote address. Alan Antony (BCom Co-operation) and Asmath Aseena (BSW), the newly elected secretaries addressed the gathering.

The industrial visit that the Fourth Semester BBA students had on February 1 and 2, 2017, as part of their academic exposure programme, spending at day with the leading manufacturing companies in Bangalore, Shahi Exports Pvt. Ltd and Schneider Electric Ltd. widened their career horizons, taking them out of their classroom to the companies where they have to prove their credentials as human resource managers. Shahi Exports Pvt. Ltd. provides apparel products and offers a wide range of clothing and shoe products such as knitting outerwear, casual wear tops, casual bottoms, jumpers, jackets, home furnishing products including bed linen, sheet sets, pillows, and curtains. Schneider Electric is a French multinational corporation that specialises in energy management and automation solutions, spanning hardware, software, and services. Native of France, the company is headquartered in Rueil-Malmaison and is also based at the World Trade Center of Grenoble with offices throughout the world. The arrangements for the industrial visit were made by BREADS Bangalore. Fr. Boby Kannezhath, the former head of the Department of Journalism, Jijisha V.C. Assistant Professor in the Department of Management and Bibin Antony, Director of Physical Education accompanied the students.

The First Semester University Examinations for MA English Literature and MCom Finance students will start on Monday January 23, 2017 and will end on wednesday February 1. The examination is from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

The final year BA English Literature students celebrated their friendship being together on a refreshing tour to Ooty, Kodaikanal and Vaalpara from the evening on Wednesday 11th January 2017 to 15th Sunday early morning, accompanied by three Faculty Members: Anila Mary Thomas, Sojimon C.C., and Aiswarya P. There were 38 students of whom 29 were girls and nine of them were boys. Albert James and Anugraha Jose were the student co-ordinators. “We enjoyed the trip to the full going around in full gusto to Doddapetta, Pine Valley, Pillar Rock, Guna Cave, Kodaokanal Lake,and Nirar Dam. There was never a dull moment. It was a big gala,” said Athira Kishore, one of the students. “As teachers, we had a tension-free trip. Students were very collaborative, following our instructions genuinely. It was a thrilling trip for all,” said Anila Mary Thomas, the Staff Coordinator.
