The Department of Social Work at Don Bosco Arts & Science College will organize a two-day National Research Seminar on ‘Social Work Approach to Ageing’ on Friday and Saturday, December 15 and 16, 2017. Around 200 delegates from across the country including academicians, social work practitioners, research scholars, psychologists, and social work students will participate in the National Conference, said Fr. Dr. K.O. Thomas, Head, Department of Social Work. The programme is organized in collaboration with Partners in Population Development (PPD), an international intergovernmental initiative for improving South-to-South collaboration in the fields of reproductive health, population, and development. Dr. Nidhi Gupta, Associate Professor at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, Biju Mathew, Director and State Head, Help Age India, and Dr. Joe Thomas, Executive Director of PPD, will be the key resource persons presenting the papers in the National Conference, said Zavierkutty Francis, the Staff Coordinator. India has the world’s second largest population of the elderly, defined as those above 60 years of age. It is projected that approximately 20% of Indians will be elderly by 2050, marking a dramatic jump from the current 8%. The existing share of the elderly in the Kerala’s population is 12 per cent, compared to the national average of eight percent. The proportion of the elderly in Kerala's population, already the highest in India, is set to go up from 12 per cent to 20 per cent by 2026. By 2061, the proportion of the elderly will constitute 40 per cent of Kerala’s total population. Of this, 6.7 per cent will be in the age group 60-69 years; 23.8 per cent in the age group 70-79 years; and 9.1 per cent in the age group of 80 years and above. The aging population is both medical and sociological problem and therefore, care for the elderly is fast emerging as a critical element of both the public and private concern. The traditional Kerala society with an age-old joint family system has been instrumental in safeguarding the social and economic security of the elderly people. However, with the replacement of joint-family system with the nuclear family setting in recent years, the elderly are now, to a great extent, exposed to emotional, physical and financial insecurity. It is in this context that a platform is offered for theoreticians and practitioners to delve into this phenomenon to be harbingers of change for the wellbeing and security of the elderly, said Fr. Dr. Francis Karackat, Principal.
