Scintilla-17, the Arts Fest held on Friday and Saturday 20th and 21st January 2017, formally inaugurated by Asianet Munch Star Junior singer Aashima Manoj, was a big gala showcasing the lushness of talents in the campus, with the singers, musicians, dancers, actors, orators, writers, artists, painters, and all other extraordinary performers in all the departments on a thrill mode making it a carnival of cultural extravaganza, a feast to the eyes and ears. In the interdepartmental competitions performed simultaneously on stages, BA English Literature students bagged the overall championship scoring 501 points. The runner-up was for MCJ-MSW, with a score of 399. The third place was for BCom Computer Application (279). The fourth place was for BSc- BCA (215). BCom Cooperation secured 198 points, BBA 97 and BSW 95. MA English and MCom Finance students could not participate in the competitions because of their university semester examinations. “It was the best arts fest in the history of Don Bosco Arts & Science College in terms of quality of organization, professionalism, performance of students, practice and preparation, we-feeling and team spirit in all the departments, and discipline and decorum of audience, “said Fr. Dr. Francis Karackat, the Principal who has been serving this college in different capacities for 12 years. “The credit for its amazing success should go primarily to the Fest Staff Coordinator, Rajisha C.K., Union Staff Advisors, Bibin Antony and Biju John, to the College Union Arts Secretary Rasik K.V., to the Union Chairman Sabio Baby Joseph, to the Vice-Chairperson, Sandra Johnson, to the General Secretary Sebin V.S., and to all the other Union Leaders,” he added.


The Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Riyas N.P. took an infotainment session for National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers on Tuesday 11th January 2017, offering them practical tips to be safe on the road while driving. The programme was organized as part of Road Safety Week Celebrations observed by the Motor Vehicles Department. The tiny state of Kerala stands third in India in terms of road accidents with 4,000 deaths and 40,000 injuries every year. Though Kerala accounted for only around three per cent of the Indian population, it contributed ten per cent of road accidents. Kerala was only behind large states like Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu when it comes to road crashes and casualities. Road accident was the third major cause of death and disability in Kerala. 84 per cent of those killed and 82 per cent of those who suffer injuries in road accident are males. Every day in Kerala around eleven people die and 150 get injured in road accidents. Pedestrians and bike users account for around 80 per cent of road accident deaths in Kerala.


The formal inauguration of the College Union Activities-cum-swear-in ceremony of the College Union Leaders was raised to a glittering episode on Monday January 16, 2017 here, with the gleaming and inspiring presence of Vishnu Unnikrishnan, a noted film actor in Malayalam who along with the dance troupe of the college danced to the tunes of popular song in his own latest movie ‘Kattapanayile Hrithik Roshan.’ Addressing the campus, Vishnu urged the students to focus more on roses, and less on thorns. “The rose plant carries more thorns than rose flowers. But we call it a ‘rose’ plant, and not a ‘thorn’ plant. Similarly, life also has to be perceived always from a rosy perspective,” he said. Vishnu together with the script writer Bipin George mesmerized the students mimicking some of the film stars in Mollywood and Kollywood very alluringly. Vishnu made his debut in the film industry at the age of 16 in the Malayalam movie ‘Ente Veedu Appuvinteyum’ directed by Sibi Malayil in 2003. Vishnu collaborated with Nadirshah in 2015 for his debut film ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, which was a Box Office blockbuster. He also acted in’ Vanyam’ and ‘Palunku.’ In 2016, ‘Kattapanayile Hrithik Roshan’ was released with him playing the lead character. Charlie Jose who came to the limelight as a comedian with his extraordinary performance in the Vodaphone Comedy Star Reality Show inaugurated the Fine Arts Association and enthralled the audience with his 45-minute charming comedy show. Principal Fr. Dr. Francis Karackat administered the oath to the college union leaders. Script writer Bipin George launched the online magazine www.dollmagz.com College Manager Fr. Dr. K.O. Thomas released the NSS Magazine ’Opparam.’ Don Bosco College Principal Fr. Dr. Johny Jose released the Sports Meet Logo, ‘ZEST 2017’ and Vice-Principal, Fr. Bastin Nellisery, the Arts Fest Logo, ‘Scintilla 2017’. Union Staff Advisor, Sri. Biju John welcomed the gathering. College Union Chairman Sabio Baby John presided over the function. Bro. Robin from MA English Literature, Neenu Varghese and Mathews Joseph from BA English Literature, and Dona Thomas Miss from the Department of Mathematics entranced the audience with their melodious songs. The western group song and dances added colour to the celebrations. Arts Secretary Rasik K.V. proposed vote of thanks.


The 7-day residential camp conducted for National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers at St. Thomas Higher Secondary School in Manikkadavu from Monday December 16, 2016 to Sunday January 1, 2017 was a treasured experience for the second year undergraduate students, widening and deepening their circle of relationship, nurturing their social intelligence, strengthening their leadership qualities, mastering the art of adjustment to inconveniences, refurbishing their smartness , and enhancing their personality. The prime focus of the NSS camp was on making bunds in Ulikkal Panchayath to conserve water against the impending drought because of shortage of rainfall last year. The bunds were made in close collaboration with the Panchayath authorities and the local people. Phoenix Thaliparambu handled a session on personality development and success in life. Saji Varghese, a cancer survivor, shared his inspiring experiences of his successful battle with cancer. There was a session on safety measures to be adopted for driving by experts from the motor vehicles department. The music troupe from Mattannur made one of the evenings sweet and melodious. The psycho-reality show by JCI trainers JC Abbobakker P.P. and JC Ramachandran K.T. was a soothing experience for all. The action-packed session on social conscience and social intelligence by Fr. Dr. Francis Karackat made the students more vibrant. The debate competition on Cashless Kerala animated by Nisha Sajan, Faculty from the Department of Commerce broadened their mental horizons. Documentaries were also screened to get attuned to the beauties of nature. The trekking to Kanjirakolli and Sasippara was a thrilling and adventurous spree. The cultural extravaganza every night, the grand new year midnight celebrations, the cooking creativity, the newspaper work, the swim in the river, the fun, frolics and the light moments with the staff and the friends made ‘Opparam 2016’ an incredible gala of friendship. Credit goes to all especially the NSS programme officers Sarath Krishnan Sir and Rajisha CK Miss and the two student leaders Emily Maria Jose (BBA) and Vipin Joseph (BCom Computer).


The members of the Management along with both the teaching and the non-teaching staff celebrated Christmas on Friday, 23rd December presenting a gift to the friend chosen by lot. Roshini P.K. from the Department of Commerce, Dona Thomas from the Department of Mathematics and Bijo Joseph from the Department of Social Work sweetened the celebrations with their melodious songs. Manager Fr. Dr. Thomas K.O. cut the Christmas cake and delivered the message for Christmas. Principal Fr. Dr. Francis Karackat addressed the gathering.


The third year U.G. students at Don Bosco Arts & Science College staying at Savio Home made a bund across Vaniyapara stream flowing though the campus on 11th December, 2016 as a precautionary measure countering the drought likely to occur due to shortage of rain this year. “It was primarily done to let more water seep into the soil which will eventually result in the increase of groundwater. The water level in the nearby wells also can be kept at a steady pace with this bund (Thadayana),” said Fr. Abhilash P., Savio Home Warden.


In the maiden University Level Intercollegiate Tug-of-War competition held at Pius X College, Rajapuram, the students from Don Bosco Arts & Science College, Angadikadavu secured the third place in Kannur University. Jithu Jacob from BSc Mathematics led the team, with Jilson Chacko (BBA), Mithin Mathew (BCA), Abhijith Bhaskaran (BSc Maths), Adarsh Mathew (BCom Computer Application), Alan Augustine (BCom Co-Operation), Blesson K James (BA English Literature), Mighil G Nair (BA English Literarure), and Ebin Devasia (English Literature), giving a crushing defeat to the team from Government College, Mananthavady in a lucid professional style.


The Department of Social Work at Don Bosco Arts & Science College made the International Day of People with Disability special, bringing together all the physically and mentally challenged citizens from Ayyankunnu Panchayat, with the support of the Panchayat Authorities. About 150 persons along with their family members participated in the programme held in the seminar hall at 3 p.m. on Monday December 5, 2016. The special packages and schemes offered by the Government for the disabled persons were discussed and the grievances of the beneficiaries were given the required hearing. Ayyankunnu Panchayat President Adv. Sheeja Sebastian inaugurated the Disability Day Celebrations. Principal Fr. Dr. Francis Karackat delivered the presidential address. Mr. Zhavierkutty Francis, Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work made a detailed presentation on the significance of the day. The International Day of People with Disability is a day that has been promoted by the United Nations since 1992. The aim of Disability Day is to encourage a better understanding of people affected by a disability, together with helping to make people more aware of the rights, dignity and welfare of disabled people, as well as raise awareness about the benefits of integrating disabled persons into every aspect of life, from economic, to political, to social and cultural.


Don Bosco Arts & Science College, Angadikadavu was the venue for the Grama Sabha convened by Ayyankunnu Panchayat at 2 p.m. on Monday, 5th December, 2016. People from all the 16 wards in the Panchayat participated in the meeting presided over by the Panchayat President Adv. Sheeja Sebastian.


Don Bosco Arts & Science College will have a fine chapel and a state-of-the-art auditorium soon. The construction is in progress.


Defeating the seasoned players of SN College Kannur, the basketball team from Angadikadavu Don Bosco Arts & Science College, won the semifinals in the university level intercollegiate basketball tournament concluded on Wednesday, November 2, 2016. It was a neck-and-neck fight, with a single point lead. The score was 61-60. Two players Vince Vinoy from BBA and Jibin Mathew from BCA are selected for the university team and will represent the University of Kannur in the national level basketball tournaments. All the 12 players in the team will get grace marks in the University examinations.


58 final year students from various UG and PG programmes including MCJ, MCom, MSW, MA English Literature, BA English Literature, BCom and BSc Mathematics appeared for the test on Tuesday October 25, 2016, conducted as part of campus recruitment by Asianet News Channel, the No. 1 Malayalam 24-hour News Channel in Kerala. A three member HR team from Asianet News Channel coordinated by Smt. Rajalekshmi came from Thiruvananthapuram, the headquarters of Asianet News. “This was a great privilege and a golden opportunity. The test was primarily to check the candidate’s ascendancy over current affairs, aptitude for journalism and writing skill, said Sibil Jose, one of the students doing MCJ.


The two units of National Service Scheme (NSS) at Don Bosco Arts & Science College, Angadikadavu, made a difference coordinating the Iritty segments of Manava Karunya Yathra, a Kannur district-wide conscientization programme for creating a society that guarantees safe water, food and environment to the people, initiated by the Kidney Federation of India (KFI) and the NSS units of various colleges affiliated to Kannur University. Cleaning, Planting saplings, health surveys and medical camps were the main events organized. Under the guidance of the Municipal Councilor Smt. Indumathi, 100 NSS volunteers from Don Bosco, along with Kudumbasree workers, conducted a health survey on October 8, 2016 in the Payanchey Vayanasala area. The soil and water samples collected were tested for pollutants by an expert medical team. The medical units of KFI and Al Salama Hospital led the kidney and eye disease detection medical camps on October 15. Mrs. Rajisha C.K, Program Officer, NSS Unit 72, coordinated the event. In yet another initiative, 45 NSS volunteers under the guidance of Mr. Hebin Loyola, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science cleaned the Iritty police station premises. 40 tree saplings were also planted in Iritty in collaboration with Green Leaf, an environmental organization. Fr. Davis Chiramel, Chairman of KFI and organizer of Manava Karunya Yathra, addressed a public gathering in Iritty town. In his keynote address, he urged people from all realms of life to protect the environment by the consciously adopting an eco-tuned life style. At the public function Mr. Chacko C.J was presented award for best organic farmer, Mr. Shyju Payanchery for rain water harvesting and Taluk Hospital Iritty for best eco-tuned government office. Manava Karunya Yathra with the slogan “Healthy Food, Pure Water, and Safe Surrounding” was flagged of from the Payyannur Town Square on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti day. The programme had a ceremonious conclusion in Thalassery town on October 26. “It was a programme that had the desired effect, with people from all walks of life, joining the movement enthusiastically to work for a healthy environment. The credit for its success to a great extent goes to our NSS Programme Officers, Sarath Krishnan and Rajish C.K.,” said Fr. Dr. Francis Karackat, Principal.


The second edition of SLATE, the South Indian Literary Fest, is on full swing despite the Hartal in the State and the unprecedented incidents of political violence in Kannur district in the last few days. Shri. K.A. Francis, the Editor-in-Charge of Malayala Manorama Weekly, the largest circulated weekly in India and former Chairman of Kerala Lalitha Kala Academy, inaugurated SLATE on Friday 14th October 2016, urging the students to make the best of the years in the campus to be fully equipped for making a difference in the society. “Life is thrilling for those who take up challenges and risks. Life will be dull for those who are calculative and passive. The years in the college are the most productive period of one’s life. The vast storehouse of energy that the young people have should be positively channelized,” Francis said. Delivering the keynote address, Fr. Joyce Thonikuzhiyil, the Provincial Superior of the Salesian Province of Bangalore, said, “Leadership is synergization. The efficacy of leadership depends on accompaniment. An effective leader is a companion, accompanying those being led, identifying with them, both in ups and downs.” Principal Fr. Dr. Francis Karackat presided over the function. Staff co-ordinator Anila Thomas welcomed the gathering. Student co-ordinator Sayooj proposed vote of thanks.
