Shelter of Love

Angadikadavu Don Bosco College NSS Volunteers construct on their own, a home for their classmate whose house had collapsed during the flood in August 2019 Iritty: When NSS volunteer Abhishek K.S. from BBA department at Don Bosco Arts and Science College, Angadikadavu was busy taking care of the people in a rehabilitation centre at Kolikadavu near Iritty badly hit by the torrential rain in August last year, little did he know that he was also going to be a victim of the deluge. His hut-like house collapsed one of those days during the incessant rain. After the Onam vacation, Abhishek’s classmates along with the NSS programme officers Nithin Kuttan and Jisha E and student leaders Akhil Devasia and Jubilant K.J. came together to chalk a concrete plan to construct a house for him within the shortest time possible. With the required backing from the college management, teaching and non-teaching staff, alumni, students and parents, Snehaveedu was ready within 104 days. The work began on September 16 and the house construction was completed on December 31. Adv. Sunny Joseph, Peravoor MLA and Dr. Vincent P.J., Controller of Examinations, Kannur University, handed over the key of Snehaveedu to Abhishesk’s parents Sunny and Ambika, and to his two sisters, on 1st January 2020, Wednesday. “Several students had worked day and night for weeks to speed up the construction work. It was a great team work. There was an extraordinary thrill in completing this house since it was done with love. We were not used to manual labour. But everyone was eager to help. All of us, almost 180 NSS volunteers were partners in this project,” said Akhil Devasia, NSS student leader. “Abhishek was one of the key NSS volunteers when Snehaveedu was built in 2017 and 2018 for two homeless families and therefore, he deserved this gift from us. This house was completed spending six lakh rupees. The required fund was mobilized with generous contributions from all quarters,”says Nithin Kuttan, NSS Programme Officer. Architect Bivin Michael designed the house free. Since the design is cure and affordable, we have decided to take this model for the housing project that we are going to take up in the future,” said Jisha E., NSS Programme Officer. Abhishek’s Snehaveedu is a 709 sq.ft house with three bedrooms, a dining hall, and a kitchen with work space. Provincial Superior Fr. Joyce Thonikuzhiyil, Principal Fr. Dr. Francis Karackat, Manager Fr. Dr. Thomas K.O., Vice-Provincial Fr. Dr. Jose Koyickal, Kannur University Director of Student Services Dr. Priya Varghese, and Ayankunnu Panchayath President Adv. Sheeja Sebastian spoke on the occasion. For more information contact Abhishek: 9526048832
