The department of English has been part of the fabric of the college since its inception 12 years ago. Don Bosco Arts & Science College offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes covering a wide range of genres, authors and historical periods in English literature and language, as well as Irish, American, Canadian and Australian literatures, literary theory, film studies, media studies and creative writing.
The study of English opens up extraordinary and inspiring worlds of literary art and ideas. Students learn a wide range of skills in close reading, textual interpretation and critical argument. They examine how writers from different cultures over many centuries have used poetry, drama and prose to represent real and imaginative worlds. The programme broadens and deepens a student’s literary, cultural and historical understanding, developing skills in expression, interpretation, discussion and argumentation that can be put to good use in a wide variety of professional situations.
The department’s combination of resources, research and teaching expertise, along with the quality and variety of units it provides, has seen it recognized as one of the prestigious departments in the College.
SLATE, an Intercollegiate Literary Fest for English Literature students across the State, organized by the Department of English, is a widely-known campus fiesta.
