CCSS Regulations for UG Programme

Duration

The duration of UG Programmes shall be 6 semesters. The duration of each semester shall be 90 working days inclusive of examination days.


Scheme and Syllabus

The U.G. programmes shall include Common courses, Core Courses, Complementary Courses and Open Courses. The open course will be in the 5th Semester.

Core Courses

Core courses are the courses in the major/Core subject of the degree programme chosen by the student. Core courses are offered by the parent department. The number of core courses varies from 10 to 18 including a project work


Complementary courses

Complementary courses cover one or two disciplines that are related to the core subject and are distributed in the first four semesters.


Open Courses

There shall be one open course in core subjects in the fifth semester. The open course shall be open to all the students in the institution except the students in the parent department. The students can opt that course from any other department in the institution. Each department can decide the open course from a pool of three courses offered by the university.

For open courses there shall be a minimum of 10 students in a batch. The maximum is limited to the sanctioned strength of the core course of the department offering open course.


Attendance

A student shall be permitted to appear for the semester examination, only if he/she secures not less than 75% attendance in each semester. Condoning of shortage of attendance to a maximum of 12 days in a semester subject to a maximum of two times during the whole period of a Degree Programme may be granted by the University. Benefits of attendance may be granted to students who attend the approved activities of college/university with prior concurrence of the Head of the institution. It should be limited 12 days in a semester. A student who is not eligible for condonation of shortage of attendance shall repeat the course along with the subsequent batch.


Grace Marks

Grace marks may be awarded to a student for meritorious achievements in co-curricular activities (in Sports/Arts/ NSS/NCC) carried out besides the regular class hours. Such a benefit is applicable and limited to a maximum of 8 courses in an academic year spreading over two semesters. No credit shall be assigned for such activities.


REGISTRATION

The maximum age limit for admission to the UG programme shall be 23 years as on 1st June of the academic year. For SC/ST candidates the age limit is 25years A student who registered for a UG programme shall successfully complete the programme within 6 years from the year of first registration. If not, such candidate has to cancel the existing registration and join afresh as a new candidate.

Students who complete the course and secure the minimum required attendance for a semester and register for the university examinations at the end of each semester alone will be promoted to higher semesters.


Examinations

There shall be university examinations at the end of each semester. A candidate who fails to register for university examination shall not be permitted to move to next semester Practical examinations shall be conducted by the University at the end of second, fourth and sixth semesters.

External viva-voce, if any, shall be conducted along with the practical examination/project evaluation.

Project evaluation shall be conducted at the end of sixth semester. 20 % of marks are awarded through internal assessment.


Improvement

A maximum of three courses (Common, Core, Complementary or Open) can be improved in each semester. Improvement of a particular semester can be done only once. The student shall avail the improvement chance in the succeeding year along with subsequent batch. There shall be no improvement chance for internal evaluation.

The internal marks already obtained will be carried forward to determine the new grade/mark in the improvement examination. If the candidate fails to appear for the improvement examination after registration, or if there is no change in the results of the improvement examination, the mark/grade obtained in the first appearance will be retained. There shall be no supplementary examinations. For reappearance or improvement the students can appear along with next batch.


Evaluation

The evaluation scheme for each course shall contain two parts: Internal Assessment (IA) and External evaluation (End Semester Evaluation ESE). 20% weight shall be given to the internal evaluation. The remaining 80% weight shall be for the external evaluation.

Indirect Grading System based on a 7 point scale is used to evaluate the performance of students.

Each course is evaluated by assigning marks with a letter grade (A+, A, B, C, D, E or F) to that course by the method of indirect grading.

A candidate securing E grade with 40% of aggregate mark and 40% separately for ESE for each course shall be declared to have passed in that course. An aggregate of E grade with 40% marks (after external and internal put together) is required in each course for a pass.

Appearance for Internal Assessment (IA) and End Semester Evaluation (ESE) (external)) are compulsory and no grade shall be awarded to candidate if she/he is absent for IA/ESE or both.

A student who fails to secure a minimum grade E for a pass in a course is permitted to write the examination along with the next batch.

For the successful completion of a semester, a student should pass all courses and score a minimum SGPA of 4. However, a student is permitted to move to the next semester irrespective of SGPA obtained.

Indirect Grading System in 7 point scale is as below:

External evaluation of Even Semester examinations (II, IV and VI) will be conducted in centralized valuation camps immediately after the examination. Answer scripts of Odd Semester examinations (I, III, V) will be evaluated by home valuation as far as possible.


Internal Assessment

20% of the total marks in each course are for internal assessment. The marks secured for internal assessment should be sent to university.

The internal assessment shall be based on a predetermined transparent system involving written test, assignments/ seminars/ viva and attendance in respect of theory courses and lab involvement and records, tests and attendance in respect of practical courses.

Components with percentage of marks of Internal Evaluation are:


For Theory Courses

Attendance 25%, Assignment/ Seminar/Viva 25 % and Test Paper 50%


For practical Courses

Attendance 25 %, Lab Involvement and Record 50% and Test Paper 25%.

Attendance of each course will be evaluated as below
Above 90% attendance 100% Marks allotted for attendance
85 to 89% 80% Marks allotted for attendance
80 to 84 % 60% Marks allotted for attendance
76 to 79 % 40% Marks allotted for attendancee
75 % 20% Marks allotted for attendance

The internal assessment marks awarded to the students in each course in a semester shall be notified on the notice board at least one week before the commencement of external examination. There shall not be any chance for improvement for internal marks


Project

Every student of a UG Programme shall have to work on a project of two credits under the supervision of a faculty member as per the curriculum. Project evaluation shall be conducted at the end of sixth semester. Projects shall be submitted in the last week of February in sixth semester.

Evaluation of the Project Report shall be done under Mark System. The evaluation of the project will be done at two stages: Internal Assessment (supervising teachers will assess the project and award internal Marks) and External Evaluation (external examiner appointed by the University). The internal to external components is to be taken in the ratio 1:4.

PASS CONDITIONS OF PROJECT

Submission of the Project Report and presence of the student for viva are compulsory for internal evaluation. No marks shall be awarded to a candidate if she/he fails to submit the Project Report for external evaluation. The student should get a minimum of 40 % marks for pass in the project.

There shall be no improvement chance for the Marks obtained in the Project Report. In an instance of inability of obtaining a minimum of 40% marks, the project work may be re-done and the report may be re-submitted along with subsequent exams through parent department.


Revaluation

Students can apply for photocopies of answer scripts of external examinations. Applications for photocopies/Scrutiny/ revaluation should be submitted within the time stipulated by the University.
